Football Training Drills To Improve Dribbling Skills and Aerobic Endurance

Minutes: 10 to 15
Players: 8 to 16 (2 equal-sized teams of 4 to 8)
Objectives: To improve dribbling speed; to develop aerobic endurance
Setup: Use markers to form a rectangular area 30 by 50 yards divided length wise by a midline. Organize two teams of equal number. Station teams on opposite endlines, with players an equal distance apart facing the center of the field. Place a supply of balls evenly spaced along the midline (use two fewer balls than the number of players involved). Use colored vests to differentiate teams.
Procedure: On your command of "Go!" players from both teams sprint to the midline, compete for possession of a ball, and attempt to return it over their own endline by dribbling. Because there are two fewer balls than players, the two players who do not immediately secure a ball must chase after opponents and prevent them from returning their balls over the endline by kicking the balls out of the field area. The round ends when all balls have been returned over an endline or played out of the field area. Reposition all balls on the midline and repeat the activity. Play at least 10 rounds.
Scoring: Teams get 1 point for each ball returned over its endline. A ball must be dribbled under control over an endline to count as a point scored. The team scoring the most points after 10 rounds wins.
Practice tips: Don't allow slide tackles, particularly those initiated from behind.
