Football Training Chip The Defender Pass Skills

Minutes: 10 to 15
Players: Groups of 3
Objective: To chip the ball over a defender who is blocking the passing lane.
Setup: Organize players into groups of three. Use markers to form a rectangular area 10 by 30 yards divided into three 10-yard by 10-yard zones for each group. Station one player in each zone. You'll need one ball per group.
Procedure: Players stationed in the end zones attempt to chip the ball back and forth over the player (defender) in the middle zone. Limit players to two touches. The first touch is used to control and prepare the ball, and the second to chip the defender. The defender tries to intercept passes by fronting the server and blocking the passing lane, but he or she may not leave the middle zone.
Scoring: Servers compete against the defender. Each chip pass over the defender that drops directly into the end zone counts as 2 points. End zone players are penalized 1 point if they use more than two touches to control and return the ball or if the ball leaves the playing area. The defender is awarded 1 point for each pass intercepted or blocked. Play to 20 points, then repeat, with players rotating into a different zone.
Practice tips: Chips must be high enough to clear defenders. Players should use a short, powerful kicking motion to drive the instep underneath the ball. This puts slight backspin on the ball, which makes it easier to receive and control. This game is not appropriate for young players or novices who lack either the strength or technical ability to serve the ball accurately over distance.
