Football Training Pass Skills Toss, Cushion, and Catch Games

Minutes: 15
Players: 10 to 14 (2 teams of 5, 6, or 7)
Objectives: To receive and control balls dropping out of the air; to develop proper support angles for players in the vicinity of the ball; to improve endurance.
Setup: Use markers to outline a playing area 30 by 40 yards. Organize the group into two teams of equal number and station both teams within the area. Use colored scrimmage vests to differentiate teams. Give one team the ball to begin.
Procedure: The team with the ball plays "keep away" from its opponents, throwing passes rather than kicking them. Players receive the ball using their instep, thigh, chest, or head and then catch it with their hands before it drops to the ground. Players may take up to five steps while in possession of the ball before passing to a teammate. The defending team gains possession of the ball by intercepting an opponent's pass or when an opponent fails to control the ball before it drops to the ground. Players can't wrestle the ball away from opponents.
Scoring: Award 1 team point for 10 consecutive passes. The team scoring the most points wins.
Practice tips: Players can provide a soft target by withdrawing the receiving surface (foot, thigh, etc.) as the ball arrives to cushion the impact. Adjust the size of the area to accommodate the number of players. This game might not be appropriate for young players who have not mastered fundamental receiving skills.
