Minutes: 15 to 20
Players: 12 to 16 (2 equal-sized teams of 6 to 8)
Objective: To coordinate team play through effective passing combinations, proper support movement, and purposeful off-the-ball running.
Setup: Play on half a regulation field. Designate a player on each team to be the target player, who wears a distinctive colored vest or a hat. Use colored scrim¬mage vests to differentiate teams. Award one team possession of the ball.
Procedure: Teams have two primary goals: (1) to maintain possession of the ball from their opponents and (2) to complete passes to their target player. Targets should move constantly to make themselves available for passes from teammates. Change of possession occurs when a defending player intercepts a pass, when the ball travels out of the area, or after a pass is completed to a target. Regular soccer rules apply except that the offside rule is waived.
Scoring: Award 1 team point for six consecutive passes without loss of possession; award 2 points for a pass completed to a "target" player. The team scoring the most points wins.
Practice tips: Reduce the area for highly skilled players. For variations, designate two target players for each team or impose touch restrictions (such as two-touch passes only) or both.
