Minutes: 24
Players: 9 or 12 (3 teams of 3 or 4)
Objectives: To coordinate group passing combinations; to rehearse proper support movement; to execute the defensive principles of pressure, cover, and balance.
Setup: Use markers to outline a field area of approximately 30 by 40 yards. Station one team within the area as defenders. The remaining teams position their players (attackers) along the perimeter of the area. You'll need one ball per game.
Procedure: Attackers attempt to keep the ball away from the outnumbered defenders. Attackers are allowed to move laterally along the perimeter lines to support their teammates or receive passes, but they may not enter the area. Attackers are limited to three or fewer touches to receive, control, and pass the ball. Defending players, being outnumbered, work together to close the attacking space and win the ball. A defending player who steals the ball returns it immediately to an attacker, and play continues. Play for eight minutes, then replay the game with a different team as defenders. Play a total of three games. Each team plays one eight-minute period as defenders.
Scoring: The defending team scores 1 point each time it gains possession or forces the attacking team to play the ball outside the playing area. The attacking teams score 1 point for eight consecutive passes. The highest point total wins.
Practice tips: Defending players work together to limit the attackers' options and eliminate passing lanes. Attacking players counter such tactics by quickly chang¬ing the point of attack (location of the ball) to prevent defenders from closing down the space. Adjust the playing area size to accommodate the ages and abilities of your players. The smaller the area, the easier the activity is for the defending team.
