Hunt the Fox Soccer Practice Games

Minutes: 10 to 15
Players: 10 to 20 (2 equal-sized teams of 5 to 10)
Objectives: To improve endurance; to coordinate the support movement used to create successful passing combinations.
Setup: Use markers to outline an area 40 yards by 50 yards. Divide the group into two teams of equal number. Station both teams within the area. Use colored scrimmage vests to differentiate teams. Designate one player on each team as a "fox" who wears distinctive clothing (hat, shirt, or vest). Each team has possession of a ball to begin.
Procedure: Players pass the ball by throwing (and catching) not kicking it. The object is to hit the opposing fox below the knees with a thrown ball. The fox is free to move anywhere within the area to avoid being hit. A player is permitted five or fewer steps with the ball before releasing it to a teammate or throwing at the fox. Teammates can protect their fox by blocking or deflecting opponent's throws. Change of possession occurs when a pass is intercepted by a member of the opposing team, the ball drops to the ground, or a player takes too many steps with the ball. Players may not wrestle the ball from an opponent. Have two balls in play at all times.
Scoring: A team scores 1 point each time a player hits the opposing fox with a thrown ball below the knees. The team scoring the most points wins.
Practice tips: Encourage short, accurate passes (tosses) with a high likelihood of completion. Attacking players should continually adjust their position to provide multiple passing options for the teammate with the ball. Repeat the game several times, with different players being the foxes.
