Piggyback Soccer Practice Games

Minutes: 15
Players: 8 to 20 (2 teams of equal number)
Objectives: To develop muscular strength and endurance; to spice up the training session.
Setup: Use markers to outline an area 25 yards by 40 yards. Position a small goal (three to five yards wide) at the midpoint of each endline. Pair each player with a teammate of comparable size and weight. Use colored scrimmage vests to differentiate teams. One team has the ball to begin.
Procedure: Begin with a kickoff from the center of the field. Each team defends a goal and can score in the opponent's goal. Each player must carry his or her partner piggyback fashion during play. Partners change positions every 30 to 60 seconds to share the burden of carrying each other. There are no goalkeepers. Otherwise, regular soccer rules apply.
Scoring: Points are scored by kicking the ball through the opponent's goal. The team scoring the most points wins.
Practice tips: This game is appropriate only for physically mature players of high school age and older and is not suitable for young players who lack sufficient strength and coordination. It's important to match players with a partner of similar size and weight to avoid mismatches.
