Soccer Training Drills Passing Four Versus Four Versus Four

Minutes: 15 to 20
Players: 12 (3 teams of 4)
Objective: To execute passing skills under game-simulated pressures.
Setup: Play within the penalty area (44 by 18 yards). Differentiate groups by having them wear colored scrimmage vests. Designate one group as defenders. The two remaining groups combine to form an eight-player attacking team. The attacking team has the ball to begin.
Procedure: The eight-player team attempts to keep the-ball away from the four-player team. Attackers are limited to two touches to receive and pass the ball. Change of possession occurs when a defending player steals the ball, when an attacker plays the ball out of the area, or when an attacker uses more than two touches to control the ball. The group of four whose player causes the loss of possession immediately becomes defenders, and the original defending team becomes attackers. Play continues as teams alternate from attack to defense.
Scoring: 10 passes in succession without loss of possession equals one goal.
Practice tips: Impose restrictions depending on the age and ability of players. For example, allow younger players three touches to control the ball, and restrict elite players to one-touch soccer. You might also increase the number of players to play 10 v 5 or 12 v 6, which reduces the space and time available to players when receiving and passing the ball.
